Zermatt was made famous in 1865 by British mountaineers, most notably Edward Whymper, who conquered the Matterhorn. The Matterhorn was one of the last virgin alpine mountains, and the first expedition that reached the top ended in a disaster with only three of the originally seven climbers surviving the expedition.
Zermatt is the western terminus for the legendary Glacier Express rail service connecting to St. Moritz and the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn.
