Utersum was probably inhabited since the Stone Age. The three surviving burial mounds, called Triibergem, evidence of a settlement in the Bronze Age.
As part of Westerland Foehr Utersum belonged to the royal enclaves and the Kingdom of Denmark was directly belonging while Osterland Föhr Wyk belonged to the Duchy of Schleswig. Only by Denmark's loss of Schleswig to Prussia came Utersum 1864 Schleswig-Holstein.
