For centuries, the same is true for the inland waterways, the main north-south connection of the region. North of Magdeburg crosses the Mittelland Canal in a Trogbruecke the same before it hits the Elbe-Havel Canal east of Water Street Cross. Part of the waterway cross is the watergate Rothensee, it allows Grossmotorgueterschiffen and Schubverbaenden to 185 meters length to run or to switch on the Elbe from the Mittelland Canal from the port of Magdeburg. The lock replaces the Rothensee boat lift of 1938. The port Magdeburg consists of four separate harbors: Channel port, industrial port, Hanseatic port and trading port. The port of Magdeburg, making it the largest inland port in the new federal states.
