A Dutch salvage firm in cooperation with a specialized Italian company, removed the vessel's 2'400 tonnes of heavy fuel oil. The 15 tanks that contained the fuel in the vessel were emptied first. On February 20th the tanks in the fore of the ship, which had held about two-thirds of the fuel, had been emptied. On 21 February, defueling was suspended because of poor weather conditions.
On March 3rd, specialists cut a hole in the ship for access to the engine room, the location of the remaining fuel. On the morning of 12 March, defueling operations resumed.
In the night from Monday 16th to Tuesday 17th of September 2013 The shipwreck was successfully erected. In the course of spring/summer 2014 it will be refloated by giant inflatable buoys and then tugged away. The recovery is the largest ever ventured.
